Salomé was being rehearsed in June of this year by Sarah Berhardt for production at the Palace Theatre, London, when the Lord Chamberlain refused a licence on the grounds that the play introduced Biblical characters.  Consequently Salomé's first pergormance was in Paris, 1896.

1895 In March Wilde laaunched an action for criminal libel, against the Marguess of Queensbury.  The case broke down after Edward Carson's rigorous cross-examination of Wilde, who was then arrested as a matter of course.  He was tried at the Old Bailey and sentenced to two years' hard labour on 27th May.
Declared bankrupt in July.

The Importance of Being Earest produced at the St. James's on 14th February by George Alexander.
